The Hampton University Flagline SILKY is a dedicated group of young women who specialize in bringing the flare and color to the field through visual effect. The purpose of SILKY is to interpret the music that the Marching FORCE is playing via the synchronized work of flags and movement. The flagline uses different colors and styles of flags to enhance the visual effect of the FORCE as a whole. Through the years the group has used equipment varying from hoops in stand performances, to 15 foot poles, chain flags, butterfly flags, swing flags, and the standard 5.5 foot flag for field shows. SILKY performs with the Marching FORCE during all football season performances, parades, pep rally events, and all recruitment event. SILKY projects Precision, Respect, Integrity, Dedication and Enthusiasm in each performance, exhibiting true PRIDE in all that they do on and off of the field.
Megan McKinney, Coordinator
My name is Megan McKinney, and I am from Newport News, Virginia. I am a 2011 graduate of Hampton University with my Bachelor of Arts in Psychology. During my tenure at Hampton University, I was a member of the Marching Force’s flagline S.I.L.K.Y., where I served as co-captain my sophomore year, and captain my junior and senior year. As well, I am a 2009 initiate in to the Theta Phi Chapter of Tau Beta Sigma National Honorary Band Sorority Incorporated. Upon graduating, I served on the staff as assistant to the flag line coordinator. The same year I began working with the flagline at Booker T Washington High School in Norfolk, Va. I went on to serve two years as their Assistant Flagline Coordinator and finally Auxiliary Coordinator before returning to serve my Alma Mater in 2015 as Flagline Coordinator for S.I.L.K.Y. In addition to my work with the Marching FORCE, I serve as a ‘Big’ for Big Brother Big Sister of America, and deliver meals for Meals on Wheels in Southeast Newport News. It is my goal to take my love for the Marching FORCE, S.I.L.K.Y., my organization and chapter, and mentoring, and be a positive influence and asset to the band and my community.
